For some time now one of my biggest complaints is the lack of condemnation on terrorism from Muslim groups here and abroad. Yes, most were quick to exclaim, "Islam is a religion of peace," but they left it at that. Unsurprisingly the liberal media was quick to lead the charge that Islam truly was a peaceful belief system and anyone who said otherwise was a bigot and anit-Arab. They never felt the desire to extend this same tolerant understanding to Christianity however. Rarely, if ever, did we actually hear a Muslim group denounce the terrorists. Clamining they don't represent the faith is one thing. Stating that you actively condemn what they do is a whole other ball of wax. There's been very, very little of the latter. But, seemingly, that looks to be changinging. Dean
quotes:
PMU Statement on the London Bombings
The Progressive Muslim Union of North America (PMU) categorically condemns the terrorist attacks in London of July 7. We mourn the loss of life and injury there as we do everywhere around the world. We offer our condolences and prayers to the families and loved ones of all those affected by this brutal attack.
These vicious crimes are completely contrary to every element of Islamic principles and morality, and offend the conscience of all humanity. Terrorism, and the use of violence against civilians, is never acceptable under any circumstances, no matter who the perpetrators or the victims might be.
But to simply issue a press release isn't enough. There must be a call to action. Dean
quotes New York Times writer Tom Friedman:
The Muslim village has been derelict in condemning the madness of jihadist attacks. When Salman Rushdie wrote a controversial novel involving the prophet Muhammad, he was sentenced to death by the leader of Iran. To this day - to this day - no major Muslim cleric or religious body has ever issued a fatwa condemning Osama bin Laden.
See that?
No major Muslim cleric or group has issued a fatwa against Osama bin Laden! Why the hell not? I'll tell you. Because it's easy to condem "terrorism". You're not actually calling anyone a terrorist. I can complain about liberalism all I want but when I start complaining about a particular liberal everything changes. A real person becomes the target of the condemnation and that real person can react. Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and anyone else can say whatever they like about terrorism. It doesn't matter. However, as soon as they attack bin Laden they draw a line in the sand. They're saying, "We condemn
this man!"
Until that is done nothing will change. Exteremist governements will issue statements against the faceless "terrorist" ideal with one hand while giving aid to terrorists like bin Laden with the other. And no, they don't have to supply money, arms, logistical data or refuge to aid. All they simply need to do is not condemn him personally. By not condemning him personally their cries against the evil of terrorism are empty because they do nothing to force real change or give a face to what terrorism is.
Dean has more
here as well.
