The Rantings Of A Christian Conservative Gamer

The Right Spin

Comments
Well, I've got two people here commenting on a regular basis (so it seems) and I have no friggin' idea why they are here or how they found this blog. I suspect they may have found it through Dean's but I do not know. But either way I suppose this post is directed toward them.

I've been talking to Lusipher about you and I've been debating whether or not to turn off comments or regulate them somehow. He's noted that many of my responses come off aggressive and that is not my intent though I do admit they can sound that way. I'm sure Lusipher could agree that in real life, face-to-face, I'm quite calm in my discussions.

Here's the thing, its fine to have disagreement and debate. I'm not trying to kill that. However, due to the conservative nature of this site, and the lack of conservative readership (I haven't been advertising much) I don't want this to turn into a "Me vs. commenter" debate. I simply do not want the headache right now. I'm thinking that either I'll refrain from commenting or keep some posts comment disabled. I'm not sure. What do you think is a good idea? Do you even understand where I'm coming from?

Anything?

I'm sorry to learn that you are experiencing some discomfort from the comments you've been getting from people who do not share your views. Surely we can agree that open debate is a hallmark of a free society, so why are you so upset by opposing points of view? Having said that, I fully understand that you cannot spend all your time commenting on other folks' comments which have been posted on your blog. Perhaps that's why your comments are more aggressive than you would have been in a face to face discussion. Maybe you should look at it this way: when you post something on your blog, you've already given your views about it. As a democratic (please notice the lower case "d") person, you allow your readers to comment on what you've written, but you don't have to reply to their comments (unless you choose to) since you've already addressed the topic in your original post. Of course, one wonders why you are so ambivalent about debating your views.

I'd rather have future readers do the debating with me only piping up once in awhile. Right now it simply feels less like a debate and more of simply going through the motions. I'm not going to convince you and you're not going to convince me. So why bother? Both sides are set in thier ways so what's the point? Seriously, what can I say to convince you that, for example, going to war in Iraq is a good idea? Really, what could I possibly say that hasn't already been said by people more informed than both of us? So, why have the debate? You've already made up your mind and I've already made up mine. At this point it simply becomes verbal masturbation.

Ah, Kevin........of course we will never convince each other to change our thinking. That isn't the point, is it? The discussion itself is the entire purpose. By challenging each other as we do, we are forced to think through our positions clearly. Personally, I find the mental gymnastics challenging and rewarding. I hadn't thought of it as "verbal masturbation".......but come to think of it, it IS pretty stimulating in a cerebral sort of way!

I agree with RightReader that you don't need to comment on every post, unless you feel so compelled. Why not just continue on as you have been?

I don't get to use the phrase "verbal masturbation" enough in my day-to-day life so I try to squeeze it in whenever I can!

But you do have a point. I don't have to respond to every comment. I just feel like a bad host if I do not. It's not like there's anyone else talking here (though Lusipher promised to get more readers to show up). So, I guess I'll take that advice for now and pipe up only when I'm feeling particularly ornery.
